The prepared speeches were informative and entertaining. Vanessa gave us a very comprehensive roadmap to health, without notes. Nat informed us that we can accomplish anything so long as we can vividly picture ourselves doing it. Irene explained why she competes. And Andrew related the touching and somewhat sad story of the oft abandoned Ng Meow.
Ernest conducted the Table Topics session in an inventive fashion, passing out numbered topics to the audience randomly before selecting speakers by thinking of a number.
Prepared Speech evaluators Vanessa Li and Terence Ip (TGIT), and Asta Lee (HKTMC), put on an evaluation clinic. Not surprising, as both Asta and Vanessa have made it all the way to the Division G English Evaluation Speech Contest, to be held this coming weekend.
The GE of the evening, Hameed Jalal (TGIT), a long-time Toastmaster and former HKTMC President (several times), regaled us with stories of how things used to be in the HK Toastmaster community.
The theme of the evening was quotes. Our TME, Joanne, diligently collected and related the favourites of our role players:
“God helps those who help themselves."
“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” (Albert Einstein)
"Play what's in front of you."
"The price of freedom is eternal vigilance"
"Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing" (Oscar Wilde)
“Do what you say & never say what you won't do.”
“The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself.” (Plato)
"Impossible is nothing." (Adidas)
“It is better to ask forgiveness than it to ask for permission.”
“We live to learn well, and learn to live well.”
"Go the last mile, and enjoy the victory."
"Every road leads to Rome.”
"Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial, everything is permissible but not everything is constructive. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others" (1 Corinthians 10:23-24)
'Life is like a story, it doesn't have to be long, it just has to be good'
"Love many, trust few, and do harm to no one" (TV show Survivor).
"Pain is temporary, but quitting lasts forever" (Lance Armstrong).
“No beginning, no end, just the journey...enjoy.” (Mark Young)
“Do something everyday that you don’t want to do....” (Samuel Clemens)
