Summary of Dec 15 2010 Meeting

Dear Members,

During the joint meeting we had with Gammon, or should I say, party?, our generous Gammon Toastmaster friends put out a lot of food for us. With so much to eat, we were speaking with our mouths full most of the time. But according to Joanne, you are not what you eat, but you are what you read. Now, that’s some food for thought.

Our Diana added to the Christmas festivities by wearing reindeer horns. We also brought some party poppers. Unfortunately, they did not pop properly and were actually a bit of a nuisance as they created quite a lot of rubbish that at the end of the meeting that our poor hosts had to sweep up and then vacuum (now, whose great idea was it to have the party poppers – none other than your humble yours truly).

We played a game of Pictionary as a warm up game. We certainly got into the game rather quickly and everyone was participating in it.

Joanne delivered her CC speech and Amy her ice breaker speech. Congratulations to Joanne for completing her CC. And Amy, congratulations for successfully taking your first step into the Competent Communication Manual. Joanne shared with us the wonderful world of reading to inspire us to read more so that we can savour more of the joy you get from reading. If you have not watched or read “Eat, Pray, Love”, read the book as the movie is no match for it. If you were to associate a word to a place, e.g eat = Italy, pray = India, where do you think love is? And if sex = Rome, then I would say money = Hong Kong.

“Big Big Girl in a Big Big World” – the title of a song I liked a lot – well it seems that Amy can relate to it too as this was the title of her first speech. We learnt about Amy’s passions, the things she cares about and her career.

As it is not a tradition in Gammon Toastmasters Club meetings to announce a winner in each of the sessions, we did not have any recognition awards during the evening. However, to show our appreciation to our hosts, we presented them with the Traffic Light timekeeping machine.

Perhaps it was the change of venue and the fact that it was so close to Christmas, with everyone being busy, but our club member’s attendance was the lowest I have seen. I sincerely hope that in the new year, with our club venue stabilized, our members will come back. And since its the time of the year again when we start to make new year resolutions, I hope you will make a pledge to renew your interest in improving your public speaking and leadership skills and come to our club meetings to practice those skills.
