I went and performed at the Take Out Comedy Club Open Mic last night.
I really recommend trying to get some speaking practice outside the club. It's quite easy to get comfortable talking to the same group of friends in the club environment.
An "Open Mic" is where amateur comedians go on stage for 5 to 7 minutes and practice their stand up comedy routines. Anyone can perform. You just need to show up and have some material ready.
It's free to perform at the Open Mic and HK$50 to go and watch. What a deal - get some public speaking practice and save HK$50 at the same time. It's also great fun to watch the other participants and a great place to learn about humorous speaking.
The Take Out Comedy Club has an English Open Mic on Tuesdays starting at 8.00PM and a Chinese Open Mic on Mondays starting at 8.00PM. The Take Out Comedy Club is in Elgin Street Soho.
