Comedy - Meeting Highlights (29th July, 2013)

In the present times, people take life too seriously. Everyone is chasing after some goal or the other, everyone wants to achieve more and more, and this race leaves people tired and unfulfilled. In these challenging conditions, comedy and humour provide a respite to the tired mind and body. Hence, the theme of Comedy which was the meeting theme for 29th  July, was very well appreciated and enjoyed by the members and the guest. In this blog, I will not be going into step by step detail of the meeting. The agenda already states that. I will take you through a journey of the interesting moments of the meeting. The biggest highlight of the meeting was that the 1st speaker, Ben Fung, explained his point by singing. He sang twice during his speech and grabbed the audiences’ attention. Ai Ai, his evaluator told him that she will remember his speech for many years because of the singing element. Another highlight was Vanessa Lau’s educational speech which explained the journey of becoming a Distinguished Toastmaster Member. This was a very informative speech and made everyone realise that being a Toastmaster member is not a child’s play. It requires commitment and dedication. The winner of the Table Topic section, Tina Wong, gave a very eloquent speech and her unusual use of language made the audience burst out with laughter. She used elaborate gestures to explain her points which kept the audience captivated. The word of the day was ‘facetious’. This was a very appropriate word given by Michael Boynton as it fitted perfectly with the theme. It is an adjective and it means treating serious issues with deliberate humour. It is always a good idea to give a word which not many people are aware of as this ensures that everyone learns a new word. Laurance Wong, the President of GAP toastmasters, was the General Evaluator for this meeting. He was attending our meeting for the first time and our club felt privileged to have him. The mood of the meeting was upbeat and there were many funny moments which justified the theme of the meeting. Aparna Sachar
